What Does Blue Lotus Flower Do?
Blue lotus shows up in exactly one Luna Lou product: Moonstruck Mineral Bath. It's also probably the least familiar ingredient on that label, so here's the full story.
A Flower Sacred to Ancient Egypt
Blue lotus, or Nymphaea caerulea, isn't actually a lotus — it's a water lily native to the Nile. Ancient Egyptians associated it with the sun, rebirth, and spiritual enlightenment, and traces of it were even found in Tutankhamun's tomb. It appears throughout Egyptian art and religious texts, often held in scenes suggesting ceremony and altered states of awareness.
What's Actually in It
Blue lotus contains two notable compounds: nuciferine and aporphine. Aporphine is metabolized into apomorphine (1), a dopamine agonist associated with feelings of euphoria, while nuciferine has calming, mildly sedative properties. These compounds are the basis for blue lotus's long reputation as a natural aphrodisiac and relaxant.
An Important Distinction
Most of what's written about blue lotus — including its psychoactive and aphrodisiac reputation — comes from historical accounts of it being steeped in tea or wine and ingested. That's a meaningfully different use than dried blue lotus petals in a bath soak. Modern research on blue lotus overall is still limited, and there's little direct research (2) on its effects when used externally rather than consumed.
Why It's In Moonstruck Anyway
We include blue lotus for what it is: the most storied, ceremonial ingredient in this blend, carrying thousands of years of ritual association with intimacy and sensuality. It's there for what it represents as much as for an isolated topical effect — one part of a bath that we formulated to feel intentional, alongside ingredients like ylang ylang and Palo Santo that carry their own independently supported benefits.
What's In Moonstruck
Moonstruck Mineral Bath is built on magnesium flakes, then layered with lavender, ylang ylang, patchouli, Palo Santo, and blue lotus flower — a mineral soak formulated for intimacy. Check out the Moonstruck Mineral Bath product page for details about each ingredient.
